Gate Repair in Portland & Vancouver

A dragging gate gets worse, not better. Whether it's a cedar gate that won't latch, an iron gate rusted at the hinges, or an automatic gate that stopped answering the remote, we diagnose it honestly and fix what's actually broken.

What we repair

  • Sagging wood gates: re-framing, bracing, or rebuild
  • Leaning gate posts reset in new concrete footings
  • Hinges, latches, wheels, and rollers replaced
  • Automatic operator troubleshooting and repair
  • Storm and vehicle damage
  • Rust repair and re-coating on iron gates

Repair or replace? We'll tell you straight

Some gates are worth fixing; some are money pits. Our rule: if the repair costs more than half of a rebuilt gate, or the posts are gone, we'll show you why replacement is the cheaper decision over the next five years. And when a $40 hinge fixes it, that's the quote you get. That honesty is why repair customers become fence customers later.

Good to know

Gate Repair: common questions

Why does my wood gate sag?

Usually one of three things: no diagonal bracing, hinges too small for the weight, or a leaning post. We check all three, because fixing the wrong one means the sag comes back.

My automatic gate stopped working. Do I need a new operator?

Not necessarily. Dead remotes, misaligned photo eyes, and tripped breakers cause many 'dead gate' calls. We diagnose before quoting, and repair when repair is the honest answer.

Can you fix just one section of fence too?

Yes. We handle section repairs, storm damage, and post replacement along with gates. See our fence repair service for details.

Do you charge for repair estimates?

No. Estimates are free across our Portland and Vancouver service area.

Can you get parts for an older gate or operator?

Usually. Hinges, latches, wheels, and rollers are largely standardized, and we stock or source common sizes. Operator parts are trickier: control boards and motors for discontinued units can be scarce, and once a board is obsolete, replacing the operator often beats hunting used parts. We check availability before quoting so you're choosing between real options, not guesses.

My automatic gate drags. Is it the operator or the gate itself?

Nine times out of ten it's the gate: a worn hinge, a leaning post, or a bent frame making the operator strain against friction it was never sized for. Running an opener against a dragging gate burns out motors and gears fast. We free up the gate first, then evaluate the operator, because fixing them in the wrong order means paying twice.

Can you reset a leaning hinge post without replacing the gate?

Yes, and it's one of our most common repairs. We support or remove the gate, pull the failed post, enlarge the footing, and set a new post plumb in fresh concrete. Once it cures, the original gate goes back on, often swinging better than it has in years. If an old steel post is sound, sometimes re-pouring the footing alone does it.
