Good to know
Questions we hear every week
What areas does Evergreen Gate & Fence Works serve?
The Portland metro and Clark County, Washington. In Oregon that runs from Hillsboro and Beaverton east to Gresham and Sandy, and south through Lake Oswego, Oregon City, Wilsonville and Newberg. In Washington we cover Vancouver, Camas, Washougal, Battle Ground, Ridgefield, La Center, Woodland, Yacolt and Kalama. We are based in outer east Portland and licensed in both states, so crossing the river changes nothing about the job.
Are your fence estimates really free?
Yes. We schedule a walk-through at your property, measure the line, talk through materials, and flag anything that affects cost, like slopes, tear-out or tight access. You get one written price with materials spelled out, and that number holds; we do not use allowances that grow after you sign. There is no charge and no obligation to book.
What types of fences and gates do you install?
Western red cedar privacy and picket fences, vinyl, ornamental steel and aluminum, galvanized and vinyl-coated chain link, and post-and-rail, field and no-climb fencing for acreage. On the gate side we build custom driveway, garden and side-yard gates, install swing and slide automatic operators with keypads, remotes and phone-app access, and repair fences and gates of every type.
Do I need a permit to build a fence in Portland?
For most backyard fences, no. Portland does not require a building permit for wood fences up to 7 feet, which covers nearly every backyard project. The catch is out front, where zoning generally limits fences in the front setback to about 3.5 feet, and any fence enclosing a swimming pool needs a permit regardless of height. Other metro cities set their own numbers, so we confirm the local rule before we quote. Our permit guide covers all 36 cities.
How long does a fence installation take?
A typical residential backyard takes one to two days of building once the posts are set. We set posts in concrete and let them cure before hanging rails, boards or panels, so most projects are two visits. Driveway gates and automatic openers add fabrication and tuning time, which we spell out when we quote.
Are you licensed and insured in both Oregon and Washington?
Yes. We carry contractor licensing, bonding and insurance in Oregon and in Washington, so a project in Camas is handled the same way as one in Milwaukie. Certificates of insurance are available on request for commercial and HOA work. Where a city requires a fence permit we pull it and fold the fee into the written price.
