For most backyard fences, no. Portland does not require a building permit for wood fences up to 7 feet, which covers nearly every backyard project. The catch is out front, where zoning generally limits fences in the front setback to about 3.5 feet, and any fence enclosing a swimming pool needs a permit regardless of height. A typical residential backyard takes one to two days of building once the posts are set. We set posts in concrete and let them cure before hanging rails, boards or panels, so most projects are two visits. Driveway gates and automatic openers add fabrication and tuning time, which we spell out when we quote.

Yes. We carry contractor licensing, bonding and insurance in Oregon and in Washington, so a project in Camas is handled the same way as one in Milwaukie. Certificates of insurance are available on request for commercial and HOA work. Where a city requires a fence permit we pull it and fold the fee into the written price.
